Modular Assets

Hello! For this blog post I'm going to be talking about the modular pieces of the Cave. The reason to make the cave modular is to allow us to easily make any needed changes to the cave without having to alter any models. It also has the added benefit of saving on memory and time.

One of the most important things to remember when making modular assets is to make sure to remember to keep track of what size you make everything. If you don't, things may not line up perfectly. But even if you make a mistake or lose track of sizes, you can always use the Snap to points to make sure everything lines up. A quick shortcut that I used a few times is to duplicate assets you already created and use them as a base for new assets, this will ensure that everything is sized properly and there won't be any issues with things lining up properly.

Another important thing to remember when making Modular Assets is to make sure your pivot points are placed properly. It's not going to matter if everything lines up properly if your pivot points make it difficult to line everything up in the first place. It's best to place the pivot at the bottom of the model, so you don't have to manually align it with the floor. It may also help to line the pivot point at the end of the model along with the bottom as seen in the picture, this way you can easily move the model to align properly with other pieces.

Finally, once everything is fully modeled out you want to make sure that all of your models have the same texel density. This is always something important with any models, but it is especially important for modular assets, as it is easier to notice that something is off when the models are supposed to connect with each other. Even if its just slightly off, it could get distracting for someone if they happen to notice.

Those are some of the techniques I use when making modular assets!
